Irish Dancing

During British occupation of Ireland, the British propaganda machine proclaimed that Irish Dancing began as a Pagan ritual – Young couples were forced to cross red hot coals barefoot to test their fertility.

This, however, was untrue. Irish Dancing, particularly the kicking of feet high in the air, began as a homage to Oisin of Tir na nOg. Dancers would not allow their feet to touch the ground during the euphoric dance for fear they would return to earth and vanish to dust as Oisin had.
